Biopolymer packaging sales under threat
Sales of biopolymer packaging in the UK could be hit as consumers have become confused over whether they can be recycled or not.
According to research by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (Wrap), consumers are becoming confused about the wide range of packaging such as biodegradable, home compostable and degradable.
However, in a signal to those in packaging sales jobs and business development jobs throughout the industry, Wrap suggests that the use of packaging with clear labelling and guidelines are likely to be more popular among consumers.
Managing director of Cromwell Polythene, James Lee, told Recycling Waste World: "Biodegradable and degradable plastics threaten established recycling schemes by contaminating otherwise recyclable plastics.
"Retailers are in an awkward position; needing to secure the loyalty of their customers while at the same time trying to do the right thing for the environment."
Meanwhile, other experts claim that the best way to bring recyclable packaging into wider use is for those in the industry, such as in those in sales jobs, to raise awareness of the issues.
