Execs value manufacturing quality

Quality is more important to manufacturers today than 12 months ago, according to research by the Deloitte Global Manufacturing Industry Group.

Some 49 per cent of senior managers, including those in sales executive jobs, believe quality is much more important than a year ago while environmental standards are important to 35 per cent.

Jane Lodge, UK manufacturing industry leader at Deloitte, suggests that those in technical sales jobs be more transparent about the subcontractors used by suppliers pitched to manufacturing firms.

She said: "Going forward, it is likely that these companies will seek out emerging market suppliers that can provide more transparency regarding their subcontractors in addition to overall higher standards."

However, three quarters (75 per cent) of firms surveyed claimed they had increased use of subcontractors from emerging markets, where Ms Lodge states most of the problems emerge.

Meanwhile, 78 per cent of executives agreed that sourcing from emerging markets presented a real risk.
