Construction firms 'urged' to do more training
Construction firms looking to recruit new employees may wish to invest more in training opportunities for new workers, according to a recent study.
According to construction news site CN Plus, new figures from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) have revealed that one-third of construction firms do not have a staff training programme in place, leading to more vacancies in the construction sector than in any other UK industry.
Paul Holme, LSC director of skills for employers, said that schemes such as Train To Gain could prove beneficial for construction firms, as 30 per cent of employees who had embarked on the scheme have now been promoted.
Meanwhile, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust reported that South Yorkshire residents living in former coalfield areas are set to benefit from a £1.8 million investment which will see new schemes set up to provide local construction firms with skilled recruits - some of whom will likely be employed in construction sales jobs.
A number of major regeneration projects in the region requiring a wide variety of skills are set to increase employment in the construction sector in South Yorkshire by around five per cent.
