Nuclear project 'could boost manufacturing recruitment'

Low-carbon nuclear power could drive a revival in UK manufacturing recruitment, it has been claimed.

Addressing the Confederation of British Industry conference, business secretary Lord Peter Mandelson said a centre of expertise for high-tech manufacturing industries should be created in the UK.

However, chief executive of Rolls Royce John Rose commented that an emerging clean-tech centre is unlikely to thrive, as conditions in Britain are not yet competitive enough.

Mr Rose said: "So far the strategy on low-carbon industries has been anything but clear and consistent. We are way off the pace and the lack of clarity is already having an effect on investment decisions."

David Powell, regional vice president for nuclear technology company Westinghouse, added that nuclear power offers one of the few long-term routes for keeping skilled scientists and engineers in Britain.

This week, Michael Baxter, economist at independent financial data collection and research company Defaqto, said chancellor, Alistair Darling's pre-Budget report could have done more to encourage UK employers to take on staff.
