Apprenticeship scheme unveiled
More than 10,000 new apprenticeship places are to be created despite the current uncertain economic climate, it has been revealed.
According to skills secretary John Denham and schools secretary Ed Balls, the new initiative is expected to deliver 7,000 new apprenticeships in construction and high street retailers including Sainsbury's, Tesco, Superdrug and Phones 4u have committed to expand their intake.
Skills secretary John Denham estimated one in five of all young people will be undertaking an apprenticeship by the end of the next decade.
He continued: "It's great that private-sector employers are making such a commitment to and an investment in their workforce.
Mr Denham went on to say the same should be done in the public sector, adding that apprenticeships are an excellent way to ensure taxpayer investment delivers new infrastructure projects while providing the skilled workers necessary for future growth.
Last week, the Trades Union Congress called on the government to raise the minimum wage from £5.73 to £6.10 an hour.
