Firms 'to maintain apprenticeship intake'
Some of the biggest companies in the UK have promised they will maintain their recruitment of apprentices despite the current uncertain economic climate.
Writing in the Financial Times, employment correspondent Andrew Taylor said that firms including defence and aerospace manufacturers BAE Systems and Cobham, caterer Compass Group, Shell, BT and Bentley Motors have all pledged to continue hiring apprentices irrespective of widespread job cuts and short-time working across many industries.
The news provider reported comments made by Christine Gaskell, personnel director at Bentley Motors, that the company relies on traditional craftsmanship in wood and leather work as well as engineering.
"Despite the economic downturn, which is causing all automotive companies to adjust production, Bentley will actually increase its engineering apprentice intake next year," she added.
Ms Gaskell went on to say it is vital that such skills are kept within the UK.
Earlier this month, union Unite stated the government should increase investment in new apprenticeships and on-the-job skills development in the manufacturing sector.
