Govt 'should support car manufacturing jobs'
The government should do more to support 70,000 manufacturing jobs in the automotive industry, it has been claimed.
Unite, the union, called on officials to create a package to boost the sector, amid fears that several operators could slow down their operations.
Tony Woodley, joint general secretary of the organisation, said: "The case for helping the British car industry is straight-forward. It is by-and-large profitable with strong product and faces no problems of the scale it does in the USA."
People in automotive manufacturing jobs may also like to hear that Mr Woodley claimed the industry will see a rise in demand for the UK's "iconic brands" when the global economy begins to recover.
The expert stressed the importance of government support for skilled manufacturing jobs, saying it will prevent other countries from seizing this demand.
Last month, Derek Simpson, Unite joint general secretary, called on the Treasury to speed up its support for the sector, as US president George Bush announced a package for the US industry.
